Eco-Friendly Ways to Decorate for the Holidays

December 7, 2018

If you like to live a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle throughout the year, why abandon that approach during the holiday season? Reduce, reuse, and recycle this December when you try a few of these eco-conscious decorating ideas.

  • Highlight Mother Nature. Light, fluffy snow blankets an evergreen tree, set aglow by the bright winter moon. It’s an iconic winter scene, one you’ll find on many holiday cards. Take a small piece of the scene and bring it into your apartment by using natural elements as decor. Fill a mason jar with water and cranberries (they float!) or showcase a single evergreen bough in a clear glass vase.

  • Get crafty. Maybe you could use a few more ornaments to adorn your tree. Don’t run to the craft store—stop at the grocery store. Add a fresh, colorful accent to your tree by transforming an orange into an embellishment. Push tacks into the orange to create a pattern around the center, then cut two small slits in the orange to thread through a ribbon.

  • Upcycle everyday items. Do you have a small basket or a large bowl you really love? Make it into a festive centerpiece this holiday season by filling it with a medley of pine cones, dried pomegranates, and any other wintry elements you like. Or take a tin can, strip the label, and cover it with a festive fabric to make a holiday-themed planter for your favorite succulent.
