Working from home certainly comes with its perks—you can’t beat that zero-minute commute time. But it also presents challenges you wouldn’t encounter in a traditional office. First and foremost, it can be difficult to focus on your work with the distractions of home surrounding you. Here are a few tips to boost your productivity when you’re working from the home office.

  1. Keep consistent hours. When you work from home, you might have some flexibility in terms of your hours. Resist the temptation to keep different hours every day and aim for consistency, sticking to the same schedule each day. This routine will help to create a professional mindset, even on the days that you opt to work in sweats!

  2. Create an oasis for work only. Another way to keep your head in the game is to dedicate an entire space to work only. Instead of setting up shop in the dining room or living room, set aside a room or at least a corner where you have your desk, computer, any other tools you need, and good lighting. Your brain will automatically start to associate this space with work, which will make it easier to stay focused.

  3. Change up your surroundings. Even with the perfect home office, you might find yourself itching for some casual water cooler conversation, or at least a bit of white noise. When you do, relocate! Head to a local coffee shop, coworking space, or library to feel a little more connected with the outside world.

  4. Turn on some tunes. Another great way to breathe some life into your work-from-home-day is to simply add music. Find a playlist geared toward workday focus (Spotify offers several) or create your own list of mood-boosting tracks that won’t distract.
