How to Redecorate Your Apartment for Free

You don’t need to wait for a new season or a holiday to do a bit of decorating—nor do you need to break the bank! Revamp your decor any time of year without spending a single cent using these pro tips.
- Rearrange your furniture. Something as simple as swapping the sofa and loveseat will make a room look brand new. Something easy you can try if you want to open up a room is letting your furniture float a bit. Instead of pushing it right up against the wall, allow a few inches in between to give the illusion of more space and create a better flow of energy.
- DIY a greeting card masterpiece. If you have twine, paper clips or clothespins, and a box of greeting cards from friends and family, you can create an artsy accent. Use the clothespins to hang some of your favorite cards—preferably colorful ones in good condition—on a piece of twine. Then string it up along the wall and enjoy the view.
- Transfer accents to a new room. Maybe you’ve heard of “shopping” your own stuff to find fresh accents. This is similar, but a little easier. Assess what you’ve got going on in one room—living room, guest room, bedroom—and select a few removable accents, like throw pillows or knick-knacks. Then trade them with comparable pieces in another room. Voila! Instant room refresh.
- Create new vignettes. If you want to go even simpler, focus on a single surface, like your coffee table or dining room table. Piece together a new tablescape to refresh that space. For instance, stack a few books next to a small vase featuring fresh blooms, or group a few picture frames with souvenirs from your travels.
