The Best Ways to Exercise Outside This Summer
June 22, 2020
Now that summer has officially arrived, you can count on it being nice enough to get outside on a regular basis. That’s good news for your fitness routine, especially since you probably haven’t been able to hit the gym lately. Make the world your gym by exercising outside! Here are a few ideas about how to do it.
- Go for a run or a bike ride. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best approach. Unwind from the stress of another work-from-home week by going for a long run at your favorite park or along a local path. If you have a bike, take it out for a spin and explore someplace new.
- Bring a virtual class with you. Even if your gym has reopened, group fitness classes might not be back on the schedule just yet. But fortunately, many gyms and fitness studios are streaming their classes online. Charge up your phone and take it with you to a park to flow through a yoga class or any other exercise routine you can complete with minimal equipment. The fresh air and sunshine are bound to give your workout a boost.
- See if any local fitness gurus are hosting socially-distance boot camps. Since social distancing is relatively easy outdoors, some personal trainers might be back to hosting in-person workout classes in the fresh air. If you really miss the camaraderie and encouragement that comes with group workout classes, search online for boot camps and other fitness classes that cater to your fitness tastes.
- Try kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. If you want to really get out of your comfort zone and try something new, take to the water! Both kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are activities that you can do solo or with friends, and it’s easy to maintain a safe social distance. See if any of your favorite spots nearby offer rentals—if they have a large body of water available for recreation, they probably do! And you don’t need much experience to master either of these activities, just a quick tutorial.
