Apps That Will Help You Escape the Everyday

September 4, 2020

Staying at home can get a little boring, especially in the chilly months when there’s less access to outdoor activities. So you might have to work extra hard to stay busy this fall. Here are a few apps you can download to satisfy your wanderlust and stay entertained while staying home (or nearby).

Google Cardboard
Virtual reality used to be the type of futuristic technology you’d only see in the movies, but now it’s here. The one drawback? A pair of decent virtual reality goggles will set you back quite a bit. Leave it to Google to find an affordable solution. Google Cardboard is both a virtual reality app and a physical pair of cardboard goggles, which you affix directly to your smartphone. Then use the app to explore far-off locales, like the Arctic or Versailles.

Google Arts and Culture
Missing trips to the museum? Google Arts and Culture will get you back in the game! This app also works with Google Cardboard VR goggles, but you don’t need them to take virtual tours of famous museums. The app even lets you zoom in to get a look at famous works with a stunning amount of detail, such as Van Gogh’s Starry Night. What’s more, if there are any virtual tours and events in your area, Google Arts and Culture will direct you to them.

Walk the Distance
If you need extra motivation to stay active this autumn and winter, download this app. Then bundle up and head outside for a walk! The app uses the steps tracked by your phone to have you “hike” the Appalachian Trail. You’ll be joined virtually by others who are doing the same thing and be able to check out the sights you’d see if you were actually hiking the trail in person.
