4 Ways to Give Back This Holiday Season
December 11, 2020
It’s been a long year, but the holiday season is a great time to reflect on all the things you’re grateful for. It’s also a good time to pay it forward if you have the means to do so. Give back to your community this holiday season with one of these ideas.
- Donate to or volunteer at your local food bank. With the hardship of the recent months, more families than ever will need help putting food on the table this holiday season. Find a local food bank and learn how you can invest—whether it’s with time, money, or setting up a food drive.
- Buy gifts for kids in need. Parents may also need a little extra help putting presents under the tree! You can help them by donating to Toys for Tots. The organization collects new toys for kids every year, and this year, there’s also the option to donate online to the “virtual toybox.” You can also do a quick search to see if any organizations in our area are heading up local toy drives!
- Support small businesses. With the restrictions of the past few months, small businesses in our neighborhood may be hurting. One small way you can show your support is by committing to doing your holiday shopping locally instead of ordering items online from big-box retailers. Since many local businesses are offering shipping and curbside pickup, it’s just as efficient—but you’ll feel better about how you’re spending those hard-earned dollars.
- Opt for gifts that raise money for good causes. If you can’t find what you’re looking for at local retailers, there’s still a way to give back while shopping online. Pick a gift whose proceeds go toward worthy nonprofits, like anything from this list. Among the options? Cute spatulas that raise funds for No Kid Hungry, chenille throw blankets that contribute to the work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and ASPCA-benefiting mugs shaped like cats and dogs.
