Three Alternatives to Help Kick Your Coffee Habit in 2021
February 26, 2021
Maybe you used to grab a single cup of coffee on your way into the office. But now that you work from home, you could find yourself consuming an entire pot over the course of the day—or more. If your New Year’s resolution was to cut back on coffee, here are a few other hot beverages you can start your morning with.
- Matcha. Matcha is a powdered type of green tea that, much like coffee, contains caffeine. The difference is that it also contains another natural compound called L-theanine that’s known to promote relaxation. Together, caffeine and L-theanine bring a level of focus you won’t get with coffee because it doesn’t come with that jittery feeling.
- Brewed cacao. If you’d rather skip the caffeine altogether, but you still enjoy the ritual of a warm beverage in the morning, try brewed cacao. It’s kind of like hot chocolate, but without any of the sugar (and less than 0.01% of the caffeine). Teeming with antioxidants, it’s akin to drinking a cup of dark chocolate, but with a lighter texture that’s actually quite similar to coffee. You can brew it in a traditional coffeemaker or a French press.
- Golden milk. Turmeric has long been touted for its anti-inflammatory properties, and it’s the starring ingredient in golden milk—and the one that lends this beverage its signature golden hue. Mixed with ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, and honey, the turmeric simmers in a cup of the milk of your choice over low heat. Once the milk is nice and warm, it’s ready for sipping.
