Bottoms Up! 3 Cocktails to Sip During the Kentucky Derby
April 30, 2021
Trimmed with ribbons and faux flowers, an ostentatious hat is a must-have accessory when watching the Kentucky Derby—but it’s not the only one. A cocktail or mocktail is equally as essential, particularly those that are as effervescent and celebratory as the horse race itself. Here are three drinks to sip during the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 1!
Mint Julep: The unofficial drink of the Derby, the mint julep is a refreshing concoction of Kentucky bourbon whisky, seltzer water, crushed ice, and superfine sugar or simple syrup. The drink starts with fresh mint leaves, which are muddled in an old-fashioned glass so that they release their herbal fragrance through the cocktail. Set aside a few mint sprigs to use as a garnish.
Southern Sweet Tea Jam: This four-ingredient cocktail is equal parts sweet and sour, with a deep, earthy flavor. Simply combine tea-infused vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup, and strawberry jam in a cocktail shaker with ice, then shake vigorously until the ingredients are combined.
Peach Sangria: Perfect for serving a crowd, this summery sangria is prepared in a pitcher. Pour red wine into your serving vessel, then add a drizzle of maple syrup and a few slices of fresh oranges. Try to make this drink ahead of time, as the ingredients taste better when they’ve had time to marry.
