Move-In Essentials for First-Time Renters

July 11, 2019

If you’re brand new to renting, welcome! You might have a few questions about the best way to prepare for moving into your first place, like what to pack. This handy guide about move-in essentials will help you transition into your apartment with ease.

  1. Kitchen and pantry basics. If you’ve been living at home, in student housing, or another type of shared space, you might not have everything you need to cook your own meals. Make sure you beef up your stock of kitchen basics, including utensils and cooking tools (think chef’s knives and serving spoons), as well as pantry staples like salt, pepper, and other spices.

  2. Cleaning supplies. This also might be the first time you’re in charge of keeping your home tidy, so make sure you have what you need to do so. A basic cleaning kit will include a vacuum or broom, some type of mop, and an all-purpose cleaner and glass cleaner, at least.

  3. A fully loaded toolbox. Although you have a full maintenance team to help with any repairs in your apartment, it’s still smart to have your own toolbox with a few fundamental items for things you can fix yourself. For instance, if a drawer pull starts to loosen, you’ll want to have a screwdriver on hand to quickly tighten it back up.

  4. Some new furnishings. You might find that this is the first time you have lots of space to fill with furniture, so start mapping out what you need before move-in day. If you’re working with a full living room for the first time, start searching for a couch or sectional. If you don’t have a dining room table, check online and in stores to find the perfect piece for your new place.
